Although he was delivered from the manacles of slavery by the Emancipation Proclamation, Booker T. Washington knew that freedom was not free. In the Reconstruction-era South, he knew that in order to manage their freedom well and benefit from it fully, former slaves would have to undertake a lot of hard work.
